Maintaining oral health while wearing Invisalign braces - tips from your Norco dentist

For many teens, and especially adults, Invisalign is the preferred method of straightening teeth. When there are no issues with the bite or jaw structure, this cosmetic approach can have many benefits. While wearing this form of braces, however, it is important to remember to take care of the teeth and gums adequately. Because this treatment provided in our Norco practice consists of removable aligner trays, it is easy to think that simple daily brushing is enough to maintain oral health. While wearing Invisalign does allow for direct access to the teeth and gums, extra attention is still needed.

Even though aligners are removed for cleaning, the teeth and a portion of the gums are covered for the majority of the day. When teeth are brushed and flossed with greater precision and frequency, tiny food particles are removed, and the number of bacteria living in the mouth is decreased. This is exactly what oral hygiene is designed to do. When even microscopic particles of food, or sugar from beverages, are left in the mouth, bacteria have something to feed on. When they feed, they produce waste - a toxic acid waste that weakens gum tissue and leads to cavities.

When undergoing Invisalign treatment, teeth should look shiny and white, and gums should maintain a nice, pink tone. Should gums begin to look red, swollen, or irritated, or should they bleed during brushing, you know that bacteria are at work, and oral hygiene needs to be increased. In addition, the development of bad breath during treatment signals oral health is at risk.

Ideally, Invisalign patients should brush their teeth after every meal. When this is not possible, the mouth should be rinsed well with cool water. Aligner trays should also be cleaned after every meal, rinsed with cold water at the very least. Gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush is most appropriate, cleaning every surface of every tooth, as well as the inside and outside surfaces of each aligner tray. Rinsing with cool water, rather than warm, further inhibits bacterial growth, leading to better oral health and a more beautiful smile.

Straightening teeth with Invisalign can produce amazing results when oral hygiene practices are maintained.
