Sedation Dentistry

If you are a patient of Absolute Dental, you know Dr. Shah simply as “Dr. Ami.” You also know her compassionate touch in administering preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures. Like the vast majority of patients, you probably feel quite safe and at-ease in her hands.

However, some individuals suffer needlessly from dental anxiety – a dread of seeing the dentist for even the most basic treatment. It may come from a previous traumatic dental experience, issues with personal closeness, or fear of needles. Or it may be unfounded. Regardless, that trepidation can prevent patients from seeing the dentist for years at a time. Unfortunately, that lack of routine care leads to serious dental issues.

Do you suffer from dental anxiety? Dr. Ami believes that you should have access to the dental treatments you need to maintain your appearance, your oral health, and your overall wellness – without undue apprehension. To ensure that you get the level of care you deserve, she offers gentle sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry relaxes the patient. This means you'll be more comfortable during and after the procedure, since you won't be tensing your muscles. You'll be able to sit still without a tendency to gag, so the doctor may complete treatment quickly and effectively. In fact, you may be able to catch up all needed dental work in one visit.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) controls pain and induces a feeling of contentment. You simply breathe in the “sweet air” from a mask over your nose and mouth. You will remain conscious and able to respond to the doctor's comments, but may feel drowsy. Most importantly, you will not feel fearful during the procedure. Your condition is carefully monitored while you are “under,” and you snap out of the effects of the nitrous oxide within just a few moments after the gas is stopped.

Dr. Ami also offers intravenous (IV) sedation. An anti-anxiety drug is administered through an IV drip, usually into a vein in the back of your hand. You experience only a little pinch, then a feeling of relaxation as you drift into sleep. IV sedation is great for patients who want no recollection of the visit, or who need extensive dental work.

Dental anxiety needn't cost your smile or your health. Talk with Dr. Ami today about sedation dentistry.
