The loss of our permanent teeth is significant, even when we have tried and true ways to replace them. Our patients who have lost most or all of their teeth will likely look to dentures as a fast and affordable treatment option. We are happy to create beautiful dentures that fit well, using modern technology and extensive skill. Moreover, there are ways in which this process can be improved for results that are even more outstanding.
Today, there is an alternative way to replace lost teeth, whether just one or all teeth have been lost. Dental implants, which have been used for several decades now, are quickly becoming a preferred form of treatment. These appliances are vastly different from the standard denture appliance, which rests on top of the gums. Implants are inserted into the jawbone, thus replacing both the tooth and the missing root. By replacing all parts of the missing tooth, we are able to replicate the structure you were born with. When faced with replacing all of your teeth, implants may seem like a far too expensive treatment option, but we have good news.
The hybrid denture
Over the past several years, innovative new techniques have emerged for the great benefit of tooth replacement patients. It is not necessary for you to choose between dentures or dental implants. Rather, you can enjoy the best of both worlds by having Dr. Ami design your tooth replacement to include both forms of restoration.
The hybrid denture, or implant-supported denture, is a stable, removable appliance that addresses both the lost teeth and some of the lost root structure you have experienced. To add stability to a denture, a few implants are placed in the upper and lower arches during an outpatient procedure under local anesthetic, and sedation if you wish. Inserted into the jawbone, tissue will grow around these titanium posts over the course of a few months, making them a permanent part of the jaw. A small portion of the implant is exposed above the gums, and your denture appliance easily snaps into place, capable of full function.
