Statistics indicate that nearly three out of four Americans experience at least some anxiety about dental work, and about 20% avoid going to the dentist altogether due to dental fear. Getting the care you need doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable, frightening, or fatiguing experience. Dr. Ami Shah and associates offer patients the benefit of sedation dentistry in the Norco, Corona, East vale, Riverside, Fontana, Mira Loma, and Chino Preserve areas. The patients at Absolute Dental can request either nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or IV sedation to alleviate their apprehension.
Nitrous oxide was discovered in 1772, and has been widely used in the past 100 years. This sedative is a colorless, odorless, non-irritating gas that is inhaled through a small nose mask. The gas is mixed with oxygen, and the mixture is adjustable to meet the needs of individual patients. It induces a relaxed, euphoric feeling and diminishes pain sensitivity, but is not a painkiller. Local anesthesia is used in conjunction with nitrous oxide to ensure your comfort. It does not put you to sleep; you will be relaxed, but able to respond to questions or directions from your dentist. The effects of the gas subside soon after the dentist turns off the gas. This gas is the only form of sedation that allows you to drive yourself home after treatment.
IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream through a needle placed in a vein. It takes effect very quickly, and the dentist has better control of the level of sedation. You will be conscious, but relaxed and usually unaware of the passage of time. This enables you to have a lengthy treatment, accomplishing more dental work in fewer visits, without the dental chair fatigue inherent with long appointments. Additionally, there is usually less post-treatment soreness than with procedures performed without the benefits of sedation. The effects of IV sedation may take as long as 24 hours to wear off, so it is necessary for you to have someone to drive you home after treatment.
